Death Penalty Opponent to Speak in Olathe

A former prison warden who’s now an advocate against the death penalty will speak in Olathe tomorrow (SAT). Allen Ault oversaw executions in the state of Georgia in the 1990s. He says seeing how the executions affected both prison workers and families of victims helped change his mind about the death penalty.

“It won’t be just about my experiences, but what’s going on in the United States, what’s the latest research. For example, what happened in Connecticut, why did they repeal the death penalty.”

Ault will speak Saturday afternoon at the Center of Grace in Olathe, as part of a conference sponsored by the Kansas Coalition Against the Death Penalty.

(The Center of Grace is located at 520 S. Harrison St., Olathe, KS 66061)

A group opposing the death penalty is hosting a conference this weekend, featuring a former prison warden as a guest speaker. Allen Ault oversaw executions in Georgia in the 1990s. Mary Sloan, with the Kansas Coalition Against the Death Penalty, says Ault's presentation will focus on how he came to oppose capital punishment. She says Ault’s experience shows that opponents of the death penalty come from a wide variety of backgrounds.

“And that group includes corrections professionals, victims’ family members, a variety of faith traditions and people of various political affiliations and opinions.”

Ault will speak at 1:30 tomorrow (SAT) afternoon at the Center of Grace in Olathe.
