Colyer Says House Bill Meets His Guidelines

Governor Jeff Colyer won't directly endorse a bill from House Republicans that would boost funding for Kansas schools by $500 million, but he said it meets guidelines he set out.

Colyer, a Republican, told legislators last month that he wouldn’t propose a spending plan. Instead, he set targets, saying he wants to phase-in new money and avoid a tax increase.

Colyer said Thursday that the bill does appear to meet his goals.

“Right now, I think it looks pretty positive here," Colyer said. "But we need to let the legislative process go forward.”

The proposal would add the half-billion dollars over five years in response to a Kansas Supreme Court ruling that says school funding is inadequate.

House leaders are planning to debate the bill next week.
