Coalition of Kansas Schools Pulls Support for Governor's Education Plan

Governor Laura Kelly’s school funding plan is headed to the full Senate for consideration. Though the proposal is advancing, a coalition of Kansas school districts has pulled its support. Stephen Koranda of the Kansas News Service reports.

Schools for Fair Funding initially heralded the Democratic governor’s plan, to add $90 million a year to adjust school funding for inflation. The group now says, after further study, that isn’t enough and the annual funding boost should be $360 million after four years.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Jim Denning says that’s too much.

“I think the majority is lining up with the governor and not Schools for Fair Funding. I think we’ll come up with a solution that the Legislature will accept and the courts will accept as well.”

The state school boards’ association is backing the governor. The largest teachers union is in wait-and-see mode.
