Bill Would Allow Kansas Colleges to Continue Banning Guns

Colleges are exempt from state law through 2017 (Photo: Hugo Phan, KMUW)

Some Democratic state lawmakers are introducing a bill that would allow colleges and universities to continue banning concealed guns on campus. State law requires guns to be allowed in most public buildings in the state but colleges and universities are exempt from the rule through 2017. The new proposal would permanently extend that exemption. Democratic Senator Tom Holland says the decision to allow guns on campus or not should be made by people at the universities not in the statehouse.

But supporters of the current law say they will fight the exemption. They say Second Amendment rights extend to colleges and, they say, a ban on concealed weapons won’t stop someone determined to bring a gun on campus.
