American Serengeti Explores Big Game on the High Plains

American Serengeti, by historian Dan Flores, focuses on a time when large mammals roamed the Great Plains in massive numbers.

Most people have seen deer in the wild; maybe even antelope. But what about grizzly bears and wolves? At one time, western Kansas and the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas were teeming with large mammal life. And that's the subject of a book called American Serengeti: The Last Big Animals of the Great Plains, by historian Dan Flores. Commentator Rex Buchanan has this review.

Commentator Rex Buchanan is director emeritus of the Kansas Geological Survey. He lives in Lawrence. He was talking about the book American Serengeti: The Last Big Animals of the Great Plains, by Dan Flores.

Production assistance for this commentary was provided by news intern Cameron McGough, a sophomore studying journalism at the University of Kansas.
