ACLU to Fight Kobach's Voter Registration Effort in Kansas Senate

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach wants different identification requirements for state and federal elections.

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach is seeking the passage of legislation that will codify his ability to have differing requirements for voters in state and federal elections.
Courts have ruled that voters who register using a federal form must be allowed to vote in federal elections even if they do not show documents proving U.S. citizenship as required by Kansas law. Kobach wants a dual system where those voters would be prohibited from voting in state or local races. Lawyers from the American Civil Liberties Union will testify today (TUE) in opposition to a Senate bill that would expand Kobach's authority to have differing requirements for state and federal elections. Doug Bonney is legal director with the ACLU of Kansas.

Kobach asserts that it is within a state's purview to decide who can vote in that state's elections.
