Chances are, you didn't see many small Kansas towns up-close-and-personal during your Labor Day weekend travels. Tom Palace is with the Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association. He says that highway upgrades and changes in the way people travel are contributing to the decline of rural America. Palace says the number of small town mom-and-pop gas stations are rapidly dwindling because of an economic double-whammy: higher gas prices mean people aren't traveling as much, and more of the people who ARE traveling aren't getting off the highway to detour through small towns.

The Kansas Insurance Department says that recent earthquakes in Colorado, Oklahoma and on the East Coast have made more Kansans aware of the possible need for adding the insurance to their homeowners coverage. Labor Day weekend is always a popular time for taking a road trip...but high gas prices can make even a short vacation pricey. In this economy, when every bit of savings helps, Triple-A spokesman Jim Hanni (HANEY) says his organization has been monitoring prices all around the state of Kansas to help travelers get the most bang for their buck. anni (HANEY) says that Triple-A is predicting more than 27 million Americans will be driving to their destinations over this 3-day weekend.

An estimated 27 million Americans hit the road this Labor Day weekend, and most are probably interested in getting every last mile out of each tank of gas. Triple-A spokesman Jim Hanni (HANEY) says there are some very simple ways to improve gas mileage. Triple-A estimates that travelers will spend an average of $702 on their Labor Day holidays...which is just one more reason to cut fuel costs wherever it's possible.
