Kansas House Panel Eases Off Plan to Delay School Aid Funds

A Kansas House committee has voted to remove part of a proposal that would delay a payment to public schools. The plan, from Governor Sam Brownback, would have delayed around $50 million in payments to school districts to help avoid a cash crunch. State Representative Amanda Grosserode (GROSS-road), a Republican from Lenexa, offered an amendment delaying only about half the amount.
“It’s a compromise position, it kind of does half for each. It helps the state with our funding issues, it helps out the schools with their funding issues,” says Grosserode.

Grosserode says delaying the full payment to schools for several months could hamper some maintenance projects. The House Appropriations Committee will continue work on the bill next week, which aims to fill the hole in the state budget.
