Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) Panel

Date:

Monday, April 23, 2018 - 18:30

Location:

Watkins Museum of History, 1047 Massachusetts St., Lawrence, KS 66044

Description: LAWRENCE – The Douglas County Sexual Assault Response Team will host a panel discussion to highlight what is currently being done to address the issue of sexual trauma and abuse in the community. The Douglas County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) exists as a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive medical/forensic exams, advocacy and criminal justice services to victims of sexual trauma and abuse. The SART strives to promote social change by fostering a community responsive to victim-survivors, their families and a society that holds offenders accountable. The panelists will include Mark Simpson [Douglas County Assistance District Attorney], Vanessa McMillan[Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner at Lawrence Memorial Hospital], Amy Price [Detective for the Lawrence Police Department], and Kristina McCollum [Director of Advocacy Services at The Sexual Trauma and Abuse Care Center]. Panelists will discuss the role their agencies play on the Team and what efforts are currently being employed at their respective agencies to improve provision of services to victim-survivors. The Douglas County Sexual Assault Response Team hosted a similar panel in 2016 and hopes to continue this important dialogue. “After #MeToo and #TimesUp, people are talking about sexual assault and harassment in a way they haven’t before,” said Kristina McCollum, Director of Advocacy Services at The Care Center. “This renewed interest is an opportunity to examine resources in Douglas County and we want to invite the community into this conversation.” The panel discussion will be on Monday, April 23rd from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Watkins Museum of History Community Room. The event is free and open to the public. At the end of the discussion, there will be an opportunity for audience members to ask questions.
