ACT Ottawa presents "Sylvia" by AR Gurney

Friday, July 10, 2015 - 18:30 to 21:00

Man’s best friend is the star as ACT Ottawa brings comedy and a chance to support Prairie Paws Animal Shelter to Franklin County.

ACT Ottawa, Ottawa’s community theater, is staging A.R. Gurney’s Sylvia in OU’s Larry Peters Auditorium at 1001 South Cedar.  Opening night is Thursday July 9th at 7:00pm, and we will perform Friday July 10th at 6:30pm, and Saturday July 11th at 7:00pm.  A daytime matinee is scheduled for Sunday July 12th at 3:00pm.

ACT Ottawa will be accepting donations of materials needed by Prairie Paws animal shelter or financial donations at each show.  Prairie Paw’s wish list can be found at for what items would be welcome.  Audiences are advised that this play may not be suitable for younger audience members secondary to language.

“THE STORY: Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after twenty-two years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg's career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate's career, as a public-school English teacher, is beginning to offer her more opportunities. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park—or that has found him—bearing only the name "Sylvia" on her name tag. A street-smart mixture of Lab and Poodle, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. She offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. To Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. And Sylvia thinks Kate just doesn't understand the relationship between man and dog. The marriage is put in serious jeopardy until, after a series of hilarious and touching complications, Greg and Kate learn to compromise, and Sylvia becomes a valued part of their lives.” –from the back cover of Sylvia by A.R.Gurney

          ACT Ottawa’s mission statement:
