COVID-19 Show Policy: There are no restrictions on this show but we encourage face masks when you can not social distance and ask that you stay home if you are feeling sick or have been exposed recently to someone with COVID-19. Kolby Cooper lost his childhood and found his voice. Cooper was 14 when cancer took his dad, and he channeled that painful loss into songwriting. He was 18 with the responsibility of a wife and baby on his shoulders when he used his high school graduation money to record an EP. And now, barely old enough to buy a round for the band, Cooper is pouring his signature blend of scorching break-up anthems and gut-wrenchingly relatable songs into a new record for BBR Music Group. Far from the typical music industry inroads, Cooper has been riding the fast track from a small Texas town driven by necessity and inspired by his father’s working-class principles. “Losing my dad and then becoming a dad made me think, ‘This just can’t be a fun thing.’ I mean, it’s fun – but it has to be a job too,” Cooper said with candor. “I have to work my ass off. I’m not just trying to pay rent.” In three short years, Cooper has accomplished what has eluded seasoned Nashville insiders amassing more than 110 million Spotify streams and playing numerous, sold-out show around the country, with thousands of fans singing along to his searing, wry lyrics. Drawn to his unrestrained, fresh sound, Cooper is earning early praise for his rough-hewn velvet vocals, layered over wailing electric guitar, and a buoyant Texas bottom-end. His new record is Country with clear influences from his Lonestar State roots. The result “is authentic to me,” said the humble outlier. “I’m older and understanding more about myself, and the music, and what I want to say. This is exactly what I set out to sound like.” At 22, he is coming into his own as a master storyteller and an angry advocate for the heartsick as he writes each of his songs— from the deeply personal “Boy from Anderson County,” an autobiographical look at how love can propel a boy into becoming a better man, to “Good For You,” a sneering, steel-guitar slice of resentment, and the dreaded “it’s not you, it’s me” pathos of “Excuses,” which was inspired by his guitar player’s sudden breakup. Cooper is refreshingly kind and happy for someone who can readily tap into rage and angst. He embodies and moves confidently between contradictions from the defiant to the forlorn. “People ask me, ‘Why do you write these breakup songs? You must have a bad past with exes,’” he said laughing. “I’ve been dating my wife since we were seniors in high school." Submitted by: Box Office The Cotillion

Description: Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, Grammy winning singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tim O’Brien grew up singing in church and in school. Gaining attention in the 1980s with the Colorado bluegrass band Hot Rize, O’Brien scored a country hit with Kathy Mattea’s cover of his song “Walk the Way the Wind Blows” in 1986. Soon, artists like Nickel Creek and Garth Brooks also covered his songs. Collaborators include his sister, Mollie O’Brien, old-time musician Dirk Powell and songwriter Darrell Scott as well as Steve Earle, Bill Frisell, Mark Knopfler and Sturgill Simpson. O’Brien formed his own record label, Howdy Skies Records, in 1999 and launched the digital download label Short Order Sessions (SOS) with his partner Jan Fabricius in 2015. O’Brien says his most recent recording, He Walked On, is about “what you need to do to survive in America.” Covering work, racial issues and modern technology, its eight originals and five covers offer an expansive portrayal of the nation from its beginnings to the present day. Other notable O’Brien recordings, like the bluegrass Bob Dylan covers of Red On Blonde and the Celtic-Appalachian fusion of The Crossing, led to Grammy-winning CDs Fiddler’s Green (2005) and The Earls of Leicester (2014). 2017’s Where the River Meets the Road paid tribute to the music of his native West Virginia. Tim O’Brien performs in a duet setting with his partner, Jan Fabricius, on harmony vocals. Featuring his solid guitar, fiddle and mandolin, the show offers a range of original compositions and traditional arrangements, mixed with stories and Tim’s signature self-deprecating humor. Nearly Lear
Nearly Lear

Get more info about this event »

Description: What if the great and tragic story of King Lear were to be told by the King’s closest companion? In this one-woman tour-de-force, actress Susanna Hamnett plays the Fool (who, in good Shakespearean tradition is actually Noreen disguised as a boy)—and every other character—to tell a very personal and poignant story that borrows from the words of “that guy William Shakespeare.” Susanna braves the most savage storm in English literature with breathtaking hilarity and heartache, honoring the beautiful language of Lear while taking a bit of poetic license. Created with Edith Tankus—who has been hailed as one of Canada’s finest female clowns—and with initial development in association with Emma Rice and Mike Shepherd of internationally-acclaimed Kneehigh Theatre, this dynamic one-woman show is an exuberant and unexpected blend of tragedy and humor. Nearly Lear is an emotional roller-coaster ride that has entranced both lovers of Shakespeare as well as newcomers to the Bard, from Vancouver Island to Aberdeen and from Broadway to the Sydney Opera House. Upending expectations of what a Shakespeare play should be, Nearly Lear uses exuberant storytelling, music and film, as well as Shakespeare’s rich poetic text to take its audience firmly into the heart of this great story. Nearly Lear won the 2012 International Performing Arts for Youth (IPAY) Victor Award for Outstanding Production. Welcome to a Lear that is both profoundly accessible and fun, while serving the great spirit, language and emotional core of the play. Visit lied.ku.edu for more information or call 785-864-2787. Description: DAVID GEORGE ORCHESTRA Wear your Cotillion merch and jump to the front of the GA line. A limited number of table reservations are available by calling 316-722-4201 or in person at The Cotillion. COVID-19 Show Policy: There are no restrictions on this show but we encourage face masks when you can not social distance and ask that you stay home if you are feeling sick or have been exposed recently to someone with COVID-19. In 2021, still reeling from the Pandemic, George put together the David George Orchestra (a big band with upright bass, drums, keys, guitar, three vocalists, and a four-piece horn section) and performed songs from his hit musical Christmas Ain’t A Drag at the Record Bar in Kansas City to a limited crowd. This year he is planning on taking the David George Orchestra on the road — with shows in the Midwest and additional songs added to the set for 2022! Getting a call to join John Fogerty’s band was a career-defining moment in George’s life and it threw him into the fire. Learning forty songs in a week and only two eight-hour rehearsals before walking on stage in front of 10,000 people at the first show of many was a challenge but earned him the respect of people he looked up to. Sharing the stage with John was a thrill, and the chance to share a stage with Paul McCartney and perform on Letterman, Leno, and The View was something he could only dream about. From 1999 to 2008 George was the lead singer and guitarist for the alternative rock group Moaning Lisa. Putting out two full lengths and an EP (under the name Culture Killers), the band toured the Midwest extensively before moving to Los Angeles. In 2015 George created the musical Christmas Ain’t A Drag, a fun-filled show about four lives that intersect in a nightclub on Christmas Eve with original music inspired by the Brian Setzer Orchestra Christmas Show and other big band music of the era. Christmas Ain’t A Drag starred Billy Blanks, Jr. and featured Music Director Bob Malone (John Fogerty, Ringo Starr) where it debuted at the legendary Cutting Room in New York City in 2019 to rave revues. Theater Pizzaz called it a “Holly jolly holiday spectacular!” George has spent the last few years producing artists (like singer-songwriter David Luther) as well as releasing five albums of his own material including the acclaimed Radiant Man (2015). Although music was George’s first calling, after graduating college he pursued a career in film (IMDB). His first job was as a production assistant on the hit TV series The Wonder Years. He also worked at 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros Studios in the Film Production Department. As a solo artist, George has been extremely fortunate to have shared the stage with The Lumineers, Robert Earl Keen, Jacob Dylan, Styx, The Temptations, Art Alexakis/Everclear, REO Speedwagon, and Don Felder (Eagles). When the Kansas City Royals were in the 2014 World Series he wrote a song for the city called “Hey, Kansas City!” It became the Touchdown Anthem for the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2015 season and still gets heard on radio and TV. Canadian Brass Christmas
Canadian Brass Christmas

Description: Canadian Brass has truly earned the distinction of the world’s most famous brass ensemble. The group is comprised of founding member Chuck Daellenbach (tuba), Brandon Ridenour and Caleb Hudson (trumpets), Achilles Liarmakopoulos (trombone) and Jeff Nelsen (horn). Masters of concert presentations, Canadian Brass has developed a uniquely engaging stage presence and rapport with audiences. Each of their concerts will show the quintet’s full range from trademark Baroque and Dixieland tunes to new compositions and arrangements created especially for them—from formal classical presentation to music served up with lively dialogue and theatrical effects. The hallmark of any Canadian Brass performance is entertainment, spontaneity, virtuosity and, most of all, fun—but never at the expense of the music. Whatever the style, the music is central and performed with utmost dedication, skill and excellence. With a discography of over 130 albums and an extensive international touring schedule, Canadian Brass is an important pioneer in bringing brass music to mass audiences everywhere. They have sold well over 2 million albums worldwide, with 1.2 million sold in the Nielsen Soundscan era alone (since 1991). They continue to score Billboard chart positions—like with their rousing recording of patriotic songs and marches, Stars & Stripes: Canadian Brass Salute America, which spent eight weeks in the top 25 on the Billboard Classical Chart, peaking at #2. Millions of television viewers have had Canadian Brass in their homes with appearances on The Tonight Show, Today and Entertainment Tonight and recently to more than half a billion viewers for the Chinese New Year on China’s most popular station. They have appeared as guest artists on Evening at Pops with John Williams and the Boston Pops, Beverly Sills’ Music Around the World and numerous PBS programs, including a celebrated appearance on Sesame Street. They are also frequent guests of many major symphony orchestras. The varied Canadian Brass repertoire features brass standards as well as a wide-ranging library of original arrangements. These include the works of Renaissance and Baroque masters, classical works, marches, holiday favorites, ragtime, Dixieland, Latin, jazz, big band, Broadway, Christian music and popular standards. Having started with a very limited base, the ensemble has created their own musical world by transcribing, arranging and commissioning more than 600 works, including critically acclaimed compositions from Michael Kamen, Luther Henderson, Bramwell Tovey, Don Gillis and more. They have transformed a previously neglected group of instruments with a limited repertoire into a versatile and vital ensemble that can play everything from Gabrieli to Gershwin. Canadian Brass is especially known for their famous holiday concerts at Christmas time and for re-establishing Scott Joplin with today’s audiences through their research, arrangements and recordings of his “rags” and other works. With four decades under their belts, Canadian Brass continues to thrill audiences around the world! Visit lied.ku.edu for more information or call 785-864-2787.
