Description: September 2022 marks 35 years since the Raven first took flight as Lawrence’s corner bookshop specializing in mysteries—we want to commemorate this major milestone with the community we’ve been a part of for so long now! So we’ve planned a whole month packed to the gills with fantastic and free literary events, like this one! But the Raven is not the only Lawrence institutuion with a September birthday! Monarch Watch is coming up on 30 years at KU, and we’re celebrating with them! Join in on the double b-day festivities on September 17 at 7 p.m., as we host an author talk as part of Monarch Watch's 30th-anniversary events series. Our author for the evening will be researcher Sara Dykman. After biking 10,201 miles from Mexico to Canada and back, Sara Dykman became the first person to cycle the entire route of the migrating monarch butterflies. This fall she returns to the road, this time on a motorcycle, to celebrate monarchs and the publication of her book, Bicycling with Butterflies: My 10,201-Mile Journey Following the Monarch Migration. She will be speaking on behalf of monarch butterflies, whose population has seen dramatic declines in recent years. “I want to give the monarchs a voice,” Dykman says. While the event is free, tickets are required for entry as there are a limited number of seats available. Description: The Shady Pines Living Center is home to a host of interesting seniors whose days are spent playing cards, complaining about the low-salt and fat free food, and of course gossiping about the other residents. Their quiet lives are disrupted when a murder occurs! Each player is assigned a character and encouraged to dress in costume for the evening. You will receive your character assignment after you purchase your ticket to give you plenty of time to get in the mood. Your ticket includes three free wine samples to enjoy while we guide you through the game play. Submitted by: Hannah Magee Weston Wine Company
