KPR to Broadcast Day of Live Classical Music on October 26

On October 26, Kansas Public Radio will broadcast its inaugural KPR Live Day, which is made possible by an arts grant from the City of Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission and a partnership with the Lawrence Public Library.  
 
Tabor College faculty members Jen Stephenson, soprano, and J. Bradley Baker, piano, will kick off the event at 9 a.m. in the KPR Live Performance Studio.
 

Art by Gypsy Jynx in the KPR Conference Room

Lawrence artist Gypsy Jynx specializes in acrylic and silicon paintings, many of which are on display in KPR’s conference room this month. Jynx began painting when she was seven years old and created art as a way to cope with depression. After losing a friend to suicide, Gypsy turned to Headquarters Counseling Center for guidance. As a way to give back, she will be donating all proceeds of her artwork - which range in price from $25-$100 - to Headquarters in Lawrence, Kansas.

KPR and Maceli's Host Second Songwriters Showcase

Kansas Public Radio and Maceli’s are hosting their second Songwriters Showcase with local musicians Colin Halliburton, Sky Smeed and Kelly Hunt. The show is on Saturday, March 3, at Maceli’s (1031 New Hampshire St) in Lawrence; doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door or $10.50 in advance at macelis.com.

KPR Features Collage Collection "Gumbo Girl" by Joelle Ford in Conference Room

This month, the KPR conference room is featuring “Gumbo Girl,” a collection of collages by artist and University of Kansas alumna Joelle Ford. The art centers around the nostalgia of growing up in the 1950s with visuals taken from magazines and family photographs. “Gumbo Girl” explores this time period through the perspective of a young girl in the South.

KPR to Partner with Kansas Humanities Council to Collect Oral Histories of Vietnam Veterans

Kansas Public Radio will be partnering with the Kansas Humanities Council (KHC) and 11 other Kansas organizations on a statewide oral history project that will collect the personal stories of Vietnam veterans. Collected oral histories and memoirs will be submitted to the Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

KPR & Lawrence Public Library Invite DREAMers, Public to Panel Discussion on DACA

Kansas Public Radio’s Kaye McIntyre will moderate a panel discussion on DACA and the DREAMers featuring KU professors Marta Carminero-Santangelo, interim director of KU's Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies, and Lua Yuille, who teaches immigration law. The discussion is open to the public and will take place on Monday, November 6 at the Lawrence Public Library at 7 pm. Students and young people affected by DACA are encouraged to join the conversation.
