Meet Diana Gish, New to Weekend Edition Sunday

gish_studio_portrait.jpg

Q: Diana, you were on the air with KANU in 1993. Welcome back. What were you doing in the meantime?

A: Waiting for a call! Actually, I have been raising three sons and working in the Alaska Public Radio Network. In between Alaska jobs, I worked as a para-educator in Wellsville and Baldwin City.

Q: What’s the biggest change in the air studio since you were last on air?

A: The air studio itself! I had worked in the quaint little rock building that was the previous home to KANU. I am blown away at the generosity and the effort that went into creating the new KPR and Audio-Reader headquarters. The other biggest change is that I no longer have a baby sleeping in Studio B during my shift. He is a high school sophomore now.

Q: What do you want Sunday morning listeners to take away from your broadcasts?

A: I listened to the radio constantly when I was growing up. The announcers always felt like friends to me. That may sound like a pretty sheltered childhood, but it shaped the way I feel about radio. I hope to be a warm, friendly presence for our loyal Sunday morning listeners. From my perspective, the potential for creating a connection with listeners is something that radio has over other technology.

Q: Other than radio, what do you enjoy doing?

A: I sing and dance and play the ukulele (not all at the same time yet). Attending Baldwin High School football games and wrestling matches is a big part of my life. It also involves some trips to the emergency room. I have directed two musicals for the Baldwin City Community Theater.

Q: What are your favorite KPR shows and why?

A: For years, I have counted on KPR weather forecasts, especially during tornado season. That may sound strange but when you are huddled in the basement with your Mom and the kids, it’s very helpful to know that you are getting accurate and current information from a local source. Other than that, I like everything!
