Name that Forgotten Town! - January 3, 2020

Kansas Forever stamps (Photo by J. Schafer)

Q: When this northern Kansas town was founded in 1872, it was named Pittsburg. Later on, the townsfolk realized there was another Pittsburg already in existence in southeast Kansas, so they changed the name of the town. What's current name of the Mitchell County town once called Pittsburg?
______________________________________________________

A: Tipton

Tipton was originally called Pittsburg. It was founded under the name Pittsburg in 1872. When it was later discovered that another Pittsburg already existed in Kansas, the town's name was changed to Tipton. Tipton, Kansas, is named after Tipton, Iowa, the former home of a local resident. And now you know. By the way, Tipton is a mere 22 miles away from Cawker City, which is home to one of Mitchell County's largest tourist attractions. Cawker City, located along the northern banks of beautiful Waconda Lake (Glen Elder Reservoir), is where visitors can see the world's largest ball of twine. Mitchell County is located in the scenic Solomon Valley, home to Waconda Lake and Glen Elder State Park. Beloit is the county seat.
