Kansas in the movies - March 22, 2013

Q:  In the Alfred Hitchcock movie Vertigo, actress Kim Novak plays a character who claims to be from a town in Kansas. That same Kansas town is the setting - or "location" - for another Kim Novak movie – Picnic. What’s the name of this town?

A scene from the 1955 film, Picnic.

A: Salina

In the 1958 Alfred Hitchcock movie Vertigo, actress Kim Novak plays a character (Judy Barton) who claims to be from Salina, Kan. Interestingly, Salina is also the setting for the 1955 film, Picnic, which is considered Kim Novak’s breakthrough movie role. And while Vertigo wasn’t filmed in Kansas, much of the Academy Award-winning movie Picnic was. In fact, five different Kansas communities provided shooting locations for Picnic, including Salina, Sterling, Nickerson, Hutchinson and Halstead.

Today’s question was provided by Ted Heim, of Topeka, our retired, All-Time Kansas Trivia Champ, emeritus!

P.S. A smart listener named Jan, from Ottawa, points out that the name of the fictional Kansas town in the movie Picnic is "Salinson." Of course, you have to read the question carefully ("setting / location") to come up with the correct answer. Indeed, Salina was one of the settings (or locations) for the movie.
