Kansas Animals - January 27, 2012

Q: The Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City is celebrating its 85th birthday! When the zoo first opened in 1927, Chief of Police and Zoo Superintendent Lee Richardson personally brought in the first two animals. What were those animals?

A: Skunks (two of them!)

The Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City is planning a year of festivities to celebrate its 85th birthday. The zoo was established in 1927 by a Garden City chapter of the Izaack Walton League in conjunction with the city. According to The Garden City Telegram, the first animals at the zoo were two skunks brought in by Lee Richardson himself, who was then chief of police and park and zoo superintendent.
