Education or… “Be True to Your School” - March 2, 2012

Q:  Kansas has nearly 300 school districts but in ONE of them – and only one – all the schools are named after famous American generals. What’s the name of this school district that includes Ike Eisenhower Elementary and George S. Patton Junior High?

A:
Fort Leavenworth - USD 207

There are only four schools in the Fort Leavenworth School District – USD 207. They include three elementary schools – Dwight Eisenhower, Omar Bradley and Douglas MacArthur – and one junior high, George S. Patton. The children of soldiers stationed at the Fort Leavenworth Army Base attend these schools.

Fort Leavenworth School District is one of only seven school districts in the country that is considered “conterminous,” meaning that it sits on federal property. Fort Leavenworth can’t raise local property taxes to support its schools; however, it does receive federal assistance.
