Art that Barks! (Name that Town!) - August 23, 2019

Q: Near the intersection of 4th and Lincoln, you'll find the statue of a small dog, standing near a fire hydrant. Part of a public art installation, it's just one of 15 similar dog statues scattered about this northeast Kansas town. What's the name of this wonderful town... and what's the name of the famous terrier depicted by all the statues?

________________________________________________________________________________

A: Wamego / Toto (Yes, Dorothy's dog from the Wizard of Oz!)

" Totos Around Town" is the name of a public art display in Wamego. The Pottawatomie County town, located near Manhattan, features 15 statues of Toto, the famous terrier from the Wizard of Oz movie. Installed in 2018, the statues of Dorothy's dog were decorated by different Kansas artists and then "adopted" by local businesses, organizations and individuals. Wamego is home to the Wizard of Oz Museum and celebrates Oztoberfest every fall.

Nestled in the northern part of the Flint Hills, the beautiful town of Wamego is about more than just the Wizard of Oz.  Discover it for yourself.
