Sign Up for Our Virtual Cinema a Go-Go Watch Party May 1

Retro Cocktail Hour host Darrell Brogdon is trying his hand at Virtual Cinema a Go-Go night, and we'd love to "see" you there! Friday, May 1, at 7 p.m., KPR is live hosting a watch party for Phantom from Space (1953). This event is free; all we need is your name and email address in this web form, and you will get the exclusive log-in information for the event. Besides this great bad movie, your favorite host, Darrell Brogdon, will even have a giveaway* at the end. Who knows what goofy giveaway items Darrell has this time?!

The ultra-cheapie sci-fi thriller Phantom from Space was directed by W. Lee Wilder, brother of the Oscar-winning director Billy Wilder (The Apartment, Some Like It Hot, The Lost Weekend, etc.). A ridiculously small posse of police, military, press, interested bystanders and the token German-accented scientist track down an invisible alien who has crash landed on Earth (big mistake!). If the X-Files and Dragnet had a baby it might look like this movie! There are numerous shots of bulky automobiles with clunky, whirling antennas driving around in all directions at once, chases that don’t seem to go anywhere and smoking – LOTS of smoking. Despite the super low-budget, this one actually manages to pull off a few effective special effects and there are some interesting scenes at L.A.’s famous Griffith Observatory, where much of the film is set.

This event is free of charge...but we welcome contributions to support Retro Cocktail Hour and all KPR programming by clicking here. If you have any questions, reach out to Bobbi at bwashechek@ku.edu

Thank you to our event sponsor Dr. Chronister of Healing Smiles of Topeka.
