Conversations

Conversations is sometimes serious and sometimes humorous, but always informative. Host Dan Skinner shares interviews with writers about recent works of fiction and non-fiction, featuring internationally known best-selling authors as well as new voices in literature. Conversations also shares updates on the area art scene through discussions about upcoming performances and exhibits. 

Conversations: Benjamin Ludwig, "Ginny Moon"

The title character of the novel Ginny Moon, is an autistic teenaged girl and the story that unfolds is told from her perspective. Recently adopted, Ginny plots her own kidnapping in order to retrieve an item that was left behind when she was removed from her birth mother's custody. She tries to explain why the item is important, but do people understand what she is really saying?

Conversations: Ron Powers, "No One Cares about Crazy People"

Ron Powers is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and bestselling author. On this edition of Conversations, we’ll talk about his research into mental health care. Ron Powers has written a book that is a blend of history, biography, memoir, and current affairs … it’s called No One Cares about Crazy People. Be advised that some of the descriptions you will hear in this discussion are graphic and disturbing.

Conversations: Michael Callahan, "The Night She Won Miss America"

On this edition of Conversations, I talk with Michael Callahan about his latest novel, The Night She Won Miss America. Based on a true story, the novel centers around the 1950 Miss America pageant. When the winner abandons the pageant to escape with her boyfriend, they find themselves on the run from the police and a reporter. The resulting chase that takes them from the Atlantic City Boardwalk to the shadowy streets of Manhattan to a cliffside mansion in Newport.

Conversations: BJ Gallagher, "The Leadership Secrets of Oz"

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a beloved story that has delighted generations and created indelible memories. BJ Gallagher has written a book that takes a new look at Dorothy’s adventures and what they can teach us about leadership. Gallagher is the author of numerous books, and among other things, conducts seminars for women’s groups, professional organizations and corporations. On this edition of Conversations, we'll talk about The Leadership Secrets of Oz.


Conversations: Paula Martinac, "The Ada Decades"

Paula Martinack is an author, playwright, historian and professor at the University of North Carolina. Her debut novel Out of Time, won the 1990 Lambda Literary Ward for Lesbian Fiction. On this edition of Conversations, I talk with her about her latest novel, The Ada Decades. The title of the novel refers to the central character, Ada Shook. The story spans seven decades and opens with a 12-year-old Ada in 1947.


Conversations: Hope Jahren, "Lab Girl"

Hope Jahren has dedicated her life studying trees, flowers, seeds and soil. Among her many accomplishments, Hope Jahren is the recipient of three Fulbright awards and is one of four scientists, and the only woman, to have been awarded both of the Young Investigator Medals given within the Earth Sciences. She currently holds a professorship at the University of Oslo, Norway.

Conversations: Carl Hiaasen, "Razor Girl"

On this edition of Conversations, I’ll talk with Carl Hiaasen about his novel, Razor Girl, which is now out in paperback. NPR Books referred to Razor Girl as “Vintage Hiaasen, in the very best way: darkly funny, unapologetically crazy, and more Florida than a flamingo eating a Cuban sandwich while singing a Jimmy Buffet song.” Hiaason is the best-selling author of 13 previous novels and 5 best-selling children’s books. He’s also a columnist for The Miami Herald.
