Conversations is sometimes serious and sometimes humorous, but always informative. Host Dan Skinner shares interviews with writers about recent works of fiction and non-fiction, featuring internationally known best-selling authors as well as new voices in literature. Conversations also shares updates on the area art scene through discussions about upcoming performances and exhibits. 

Conversations: Tyrell Johnson, "The Wolves of Winter"

What does it take to survive? On this edition of Conversations, Tyrell Johnson joins us to talk about his debut novel, The Wolves of Winter. The book is set in a post-apocalyptic future where his central character fights for survival in the Canadian Yukon. Johnson says that, in part, the reason he made his protagonist a young woman is because he wanted his daughter to see a strong female character in his novel.


 

Conversations: Rachel Simmons, "Enough As She Is"

On this edition of Conversations, Rachel Simmons joins us to talk about "Enough As She Is: How to Help Girls Move Beyond Impossible Standards of Success to Live Healthy, Happy and Fulfilling Lives." Simmons works internationally to empower women and girls to be more authentic, assertive and self-aware. Her previous New York Times bestselling books include Odd Girl Out and The Curse of the Good Girl.


 

Conversations: Barbara Risman, "Where The Millennials Will Take Us"

On this edition of Conversations, Barbara Risman joins us to talk about what she learned researching her latest book, Where The Millennials Will Take Us: A New Generation Wrestles with the Gender Structure. Risman is Distinguished Professor of Arts & Sciences in the Department of Sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago.


Conversations: Jeffery Deaver, "The Cutting Edge"

Jeffery Deaver is a former journalist, folksinger and attorney. He's also the #1 international bestselling author of more than 35 novels. On this edition of Conversations, he joins us to talk about his latest novel, The Cutting Edge. This is another in a series of books that feature forensic detectives Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs.

Tara Cousineau is a clinical psychologist and researcher. On this edition of Conversations, she joins us to talk about her book, "The Kindness Cure: How the Science of Compassion Can Heal you Heart and Your World." Her areas of expertise include child and adolescent health; mind-body medicine, and the science of happiness.


Conversations: Amy Bass, "One Goal"

One Goal: A Coach, A Team, and the Game that Brought a Divided Town Together tells the story of a soccer team in Lewiston, Maine and how their success is helping the town navigate a large cultural shift. On this edition of Conversations, we'll hear about the Lewiston experience from the author, Amy Bass. She is a professor of history in New York and her writing has appeared in Slate, Salon, and CNN Opinion. Her work for NBC Olympics coverage earned her an Emmy in 2012.

Conversations: Brad Meltzer, "I Am Harriet Tubman"

What is a hero? Well, it's not people who are famous for being famous. Bestselling author Brad Meltzer created a series of children's books because he wanted to provide inspiring role models for his children. On this edition of Conversations, Meltzer joins us to talk about his Ordinary People Change the World series, which is designed for 4-8 year olds. The latest book in the series is I Am Harriet Tubman.


 

Conversations: Brendan Wiley, Topeka Zoo & Camp Cowabunga

On this edition of Conversations, I talk with Brendan Wiley, Director of the Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center. He joins us to talk about the history of the zoo, current exhibits and their new addition, Camp Cowabunga. The zoo is working on finishing the fundraising for Camp Cowabunga and hopes to open the new area to the public this Fall.
