Police: Shooter Dead; Mass Casualties After Orlando Nightclub Shooting

Orlando police officers direct family members away from a shooting at a nightclub in Orlando, Fla., Sunday.

A gunman opened fire at a gay nightclub in Orlando and police say "this is a mass casualty situation."

The shooter is dead, the Orlando Police Department posted on its Twitter account. They earlier reported "multiple injuries" without specifying exact figures.

Police initially reported that they were responding to a shooting at around 2 a.m. EST at popular gay nightclub Pulse Orlando. The department advised people to "stay away from the area."

"Everyone get out of pulse and keep running," Pulse Orlando posted to its Facebook page at 2:09 a.m.

The police also said that law enforcement carried out a controlled explosion at the scene, without providing details.

They are seeking further information from witnesses to assist with the investigation.

This comes a day after a gunman shot and killed singer Christina Grimmie at an Orlando concert venue.

This is a developing story. Some things that get reported by the media will later turn out to be wrong. We will focus on reports from police officials and other authorities, credible news outlets and reporters who are at the scene. We will update as the situation develops.
