Bremby Explains Decision to Reject Power Plants   Date: April 10, 2008
The state regulator blocking two coal-fired power plants in southwest Kansas says the science about global warming supports him. But Health and Environment Secretary Rod Bremby says science still wasn't enough. Instead, Bremby said, a U.S. Supreme Court about carbon dioxide in April 2007 played a crucial role. In October, he denied an air-quality permit to Sunflower Electric Power Corp. Sunflower wants to build the two plants in Finney County. Legislators want to overturn Bremby's decision and strip him of some power. In an interview with The Associated Press, Bremby said other factors also were important. He said his decision had a moral dimension because of his duty to protect the environment.
