Aaron Douglas Art Exhibition   Date: September 28, 2007
You may not know Aaron Douglas's name, but if you think of the design and look of the Roaring Twenties, chances are that you do know what his art looks like. Topeka native Aaron Douglas designed "the look of the Harlem Renaissance." The first national, traveling retrospective of Douglas's art was developed and organized at the University of Kansas, and it's now open to the public. In connection with the exhibition, KU is holding a major academic conference on his life and work. KPR's Laura Lorson took a tour of the exhibit with curator Susan Earle and exhibition coordinator Stephanie Fox Knappe, to learn more about this pioneering Kansas artist. Knappe started off with a short primer on the artist's life.

The "Aaron Douglas: African American Modernist" conference will get underway tonight (FRI) at the University of Kansas. Tomorrow (SAT) has been declared "Aaron Douglas Day" by Governor Kathleen Sebelius. The Aaron Douglas art exhibition will continue through December 2nd at the Spencer Museum of Art. In 2008, the exhibition will travel to Nashville, New York City, and to the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC.
