KS Senate Panel Considers Shield Law for Reporters   Date: February 10, 2009
The Kansas Senate Judiciary Committee plans a hearing Friday on a proposed shield law for Kansas journalists. Proponents say the law is needed to protect confidential informants as well as journalists who don't want to identify their sources. The measure would let judges order reporters to release information only under certain conditions. For example, there would have to be "clear and convincing evidence" that the information is relevant to the controversy and cannot be obtained any other way. The Reporters Committee on Freedom of the Press says at least 34 states and the District of Columbia have some type of shield law.
