Trio Affettuoso

The Trio Affettuoso will be heading to the 7th Plowman Chamber Music Competition in Columbia, MO this weekend.  The ensemble came to KPR's studios today with their coach from the KU School of Music, Scott McBride-Smith, and performed the Brahms Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano, Op. 114, and the final two movements of Beethoven's "Gassenhauer" trio, Op. 11.  Their performance was great!  Click on "Listen" to enjoy Sunnat Ibragimov, cello; Teng Fu, piano; Puyin Bai, clarinet.

Musica Vocale

Four singers from the 32-member Musica Vocale came to KPR's studios today with conductor Arnold Epley to give us a preview of their upcoming concerts, "Singet!" The first concert is Sunday, March 22nd at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kansas City at 2PM, and the second is at First Presbyterian Church in Leavenworth, Sunday March 29th at 3PM. One of the pieces that will be performed is the Schubert Mass in G.  We were treated to three movements from this work this morning.  Click on listen to enjoy!

Ensemble Kiowa

The Ensemble Kiowa recently won top ensemble in a regional championship.  This weekend, they'll be in Las Vegas for the national championships!  They came to KPR's performance studio today with their coaches from KU, Scott Smith and Michael Kirkendoll.  They amazed us with their virtuosic performances of works by Khachaturian, Nino Rota, Mozart and Guillaume Connesson.  The ensemble as pictured is:  Mandy Wang, violin; Mickayla Chapman, clarinet; Margaret Lambie, flute; and Cong Cong, piano.  Click on Listen to enjoy this performance!

Daniel Cunha, piano

Portuguese pianist Daniel Cunha is in Lawrence preparing for a concert with pianist Evangelos Spanos at the Lied Center on Sunday, March 1. Daniel came to KPR's studios to talk about the concert today. While he was here, he sat down at our Steinway and performed works by Chopin and Enrique Granados.

Loretta Kelley in the KPR Live Performance Studio

Loretta Kelley, the foremost Hardanger fiddle performer in America will be coming to Lawrence to give us a spellbinding performance. She has appeared on Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion." Her recording with Andrea Hoag and Charlie Pilzer, "Hambo in the Snow," was nominated for a GRAMMY award in the Best Traditional World Music Album category.

Schulhoff Concertino Trio from Kansas City Symphony

A Trio from the Kansas City Symphony came to Kansas Public Radio to perform the Erwin Schulhoff Concertino.  This will be part of the Symphony's free Happy Hour Concert happening Wednesday night, February 11th.  Click on listen to enjoy this great performance of the Schulhoff Concertino.  Mike Gordon played flute & piccolo, Youming Chen played viola, and playing double bass, Evan Halloin.

Bach Aria Soloists - Dialogue

The Bach Aria Soloists will be performing in a program Saturday, February 7th at Village Presbyterian Church in Prarie Village.  They stopped by KPR's performance studio for a preview today.  We were treated to an excerpt from the work commissioned for their 15th Anniversary, "Dialogue" by Narong Prangcharoen.  We also enjoyed works by Bach and Villa-Lobos.  Click on Listen to enjoy this performance!

Ellen Lind, cello - Topeka Symphony Orchestra

Ellen Lind, principal cellist for the Topeka Symphony Orchestra came to KPR's studios with pianist Laura Hrivnak and TSO conductor Kyle Wiley-Pickett.  On Saturday, February 14th, 7:30PM at White Concert Hall, Ellen will perform the Elgar Cello Concerto with the Orchestra.  This morning, we were treated to a beautiful performance of the first and third movements of this wondrous work by Ellen and Laura.  Click on Listen, and enjoy!


Three members of the ensemble "Cucharada" came to KPR's Live Performance Studio to give a preview of their upcoming concert Sunday night, 1/25, at Grunauer in Kansas City.  We were treated to twenty minutes of great Tango music on flute, violin and guitar.  Click on listen, and enjoy!

Jack Winerock and Chaeyoung Park, piano

KU Professor of Piano Jack Winerock and his student, Chaeyoung Park of Lawrence opened KPR's Live Performance Studio for the first time in 2015 by giving us previews of their upcoming recitals at the Lawrence Arts Center. Jack will perform Wednesday, January 7th at 7:30PM.  The following Wednesday, Chaeyoung joins Jack for another concert at 7:30PM.  From what we heard today, these concerts will be very special evenings.  Click on listen to enjoy their performance on KPR!
