Joshua Bell interview with Michael Keelan

Violinist Joshua Bell is one of the best-known names in classical music. This month he releases an album with cellist Steven Isserlis, titled For the Love of Brahms. It contains the Brahms Double Concerto, Schumann violin concerto slow movement (in an arrangement by Benjamin Britten), and Brahms's original version of his first piano trio. Michael Keelan talks with Bell about the album.

Caroline Goulding interview

On September 30, 2016, the KU Symphony orchestra will be joined by violinist Caroline Goulding for Mendelssohn's Op.64 violin concerto. Michael Keelan talked with her about her new album of Enescu, Dvorak, and Schumann.

Kansas City Chamber Orchestra August 25, 2016

The Kansas City Chamber Orchestra opened its 30th season Aug. 27 at the Kauffman Center, and Park University's International Center for Music supplies the soloists. Faculty members Ben Sayevich, Lolita Lisovskaya-Sayevich, and Daniel Veis will solo in the Beethoven Triple Concerto, and played Arensky at the KPR studio. Violinist Laurel Gagnon plays Wieniawski's Polonaise Brillante, pianist Jinhong Li plays Chopin's Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise, and cellist Dilshod Narzillaev plays Tchaikovsky's Pezzo Capriccioso.

Steven Spooner and Massimiliano Baggio August 18, 2016

This coming Sunday, Steven Spooner will play a duo recital with the Italian pianist, Massimiliano Baggio (Professor at the renowned Milan Conservatory) of gorgeous music by Brahms. The recital is free and takes place Sunday, August 21, at 7:30 p.m., in Swarthout Recital Hall.

Heartland Chamber Music Festival 2016

String students from the Heartland Chamber Music Academy visited the KPR studios to play excerpts from Haydn quartets (Op.76/1 and 76/3), as well as forming a self-conducted chamber orchestra for the elegy from Tchaikovsky's string serenade.

Lawrence Opera Theatre August 2, 2016

Members of the Lawrence Opera Theatre visited the KPR studios on 8/2 to preview their season (8/5-14)  celebrating the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare. Alexandra Roth sang Dido's Lament by Purcell, followed by Antonio Cruz with Rodgers and Hart's The Shortest Day of the Year. Artistic director Hugo Vera contributed a William Schuman song, and Jennifer Wilson finished with the waltz from Gounod's Romeo et Juliette. All were accompanied by Kyle Naig.

Pianist Chaeyoung Park

Pianist Chaeyoung Park, fresh off her success in the Gina Bachauer Piano Competition, plays Haydn's Sonata No. 41, and the Schumann Novelette Op. 21/8. She is soloist in the Saint-Saëns g minor concerto Saturday, July 23 at the Lied Center at 7:30. That's followed by a recital Sunday at Swarthout Recital Hall at 3:00.

IIYM (International Institute for Young Musicans) International Piano Competition Finals

The three prizewinners of the International Institute for Young Musicians at the University of Kansas  played their winning selections in advance of the winners' concert 7/16 at the Lawrence Arts Center. Leah Deobald is 16, and Jessica Zhang and Catherine Huang are 14.

Cellist Meredith McCook

Cellist Meredith McCook plays the first of Bach's cello suites. She just completed her first season with the Kansas City Symphony, after playing for Miami's New World Symphony.

The Amernet String Quartet

The Amernet Quartet played live in advance of their 6/12 concert at the Sunflower Music Festival in Topeka. Their program here includes the opening of Haydn's "Emperor" Quartet, Op.76/3, and Erwin Schulhoff's Five Pieces, a set of stylized dances, for string quartet.
