Filmmaker Kiki Wilson on conductor Robert Shaw

Few conductors have inspired such a devoted following as Robert Shaw, who dominated choral conducting in the second half of the twentieth century. Kiki Wilson sang for Shaw and has made a film about him, receiving a Kansas City premiere Feb. 11 at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral. Steven Spooner, piano January 27, 2017

​Steven Spooner visited the KPR studios to preview his Jan. 29 concert at Grace Cathedral in Topeka. He played four Chopin mazurkas, followed by his own Concert Etude for Vladimir Horowitz, adopting a very recognizable melody in the style of the Russian virtuoso.

Composer Adam Schoenberg on his new album with the KC Symphony

Composer Adam Schoenberg has a strong relationship with the Kansas City Symphony, having honed his craft at writing for orchestra with the ensemble. The new album conducted by Michael Stern features three of Schoenberg's pieces, all of which have connections to the musicians involved. Michael Keelan talks with him about it, and the artworks which inspired two of the pieces. The premiere of Schoenberg's Symphony No. 2 is on March 18 at the Kauffman Center, with the University of Texas-Austin Wind Ensemble.

Champion Figure Skater Mirai Nagasu

Classical music plays a prominent part in competitive figure skating. This year, the national championships are held in Kansas City from Jan. 14-22. Michael Keelan talked with Mirai Nagasu, who has won multiple medals in the annual event over several years, including the gold, about the role of music. She competes on Jan. 19, using Chopin's posthumous c# minor nocturne, and Jan. 21.

KC Symphony concertmaster Noah Geller as soloist

Noah Geller is soloist in the Bartok second violin concerto Jan. 13-15 with the Kansas City Symphony, where he is ordinarily concertmaster. Michael Keelan talked with him about the concerto. The program also includes Dvorak and Kodaly.

Angela Parrish on the film La La Land

Angela Parrish of Kansas succeeded in what so many have attempted- to move to Los Angeles and get in the movie business. Her voice is featured on the soundtrack to the new musical La La Land, with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. Michael Keelan talks with her about the process of recording the soundtrack, and her versatile career.

Kansas City Symphony violinist Stirling Trent and Chorus November 29, 2016

Violinist Stirling Trent stopped by the KPR studio in advance of his Dec. 7 solo appearance with the KC Symphony, where he serves as associate principal 2nd violin. He played the Bach Chaconne. Then, members of the symphony's chorus gave us a flurry of Christmas carols ahead of their performances of Messiah Dec. 1-4, and Christmas Festival Dec. 15-20, all at the Kauffman Center.
