Bass Scott Conner on singing Strauss at the Met

Olathe-born bass Scott Conner has risen rapidly in the international opera world. This month and next, he appears at the Metropolitan Opera in New York with Renee Fleming in Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier. Michael Keelan talked with him about the process of preparing. KPR listeners can see and hear him in the May 13 live broadcast from the Met, streamed into movie theaters.

Colin Roust on composer Georges Auric

Before there was Disney, there was Jean Cocteau, and his film "La Belle et la Bête" (Beauty and the Beast). The composer was Georges Auric, who became a major international figure in cinematic scores. Michael Keelan talks with KU professor Colin Roust, who is working on a book about Auric.

Mei-Chun Chen, viola March 17, 2017

​ Mei-Chun Chen is the viola soloist for the Topeka Symphony's March 18 concert. She is featured in William Walton's viola concerto, and played the first two movements of the concerto live in the KPR studio, with pianist Erik Lawrence. Michael Keelan talked with her about viola concertos, and with guest conductor Brian Stone about the rest of the program, including Stravinsky and Theofanidis.

Allegresse and Dahlia March 9, 2017

The trio Allégresse visited the KPR studio to play music by KU faculty composer Kip Haaheim, "Childhood's End." That and other newly written pieces with the Dahlia Trio and others will appear on Saturday's concert at the Lawrence Arts Center at 7:30.

Composer Jake Heggie on opera and song

Jake Heggie is among today's most performed American composers, especially of vocal music. His opera Dead Man Walking is at the KC Lyric Opera March 10 and 12, and KU faculty member Joyce Castle performs a song cycle, Statuesque, that Heggie wrote for her. The concert with other KU faculty is March 12 at 7:30. Michael Keelan talked with Heggie about both pieces and how he crafts his subject matter.
