USDA Considers Changes to SNAP Food Program

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue says he wants to give states more flexibility to experiment with things like job training, fraud monitoring and drug testing of recipients.

States soon may have more authority in deciding how they distribute federal food benefits to millions of low-income people. As Harvest Public Media’s Grant Gerlock reports, that’s because the U.S. Department of Agriculture is looking to focus more on beneficiaries receiving job training.

Harvest Public Media is a reporting collaboration focused on agricultural and rural issues throughout the Midwest.
