Town Marks Anniversary of Elevator Explosion

The elevator damaged in the explosion last year. (Source: Associated Press)Today (MON) marks one year since a grain elevator explosion in Atchison that left six people dead. More than 100 people gathered yesterday (SUN) to remember the explosion at the Bartlett Grain Elevator. Justine Keil’s (“kyle”) father Travis was killed. Justine said she and her father didn’t always have the best relationship, but they had been working to improve it before the accident.

Inga Klahr (“clair”) is the wife of killed worker Darrek Klahr (“clair”). She asked why grain elevators aren’t subject to more rigorous inspections.

The federal government brought more than a dozen safety citations against Bartlett Grain Company and Kansas Grain Inspection Services. The two companies appealed the citations and more than $400,000 in proposed fines.
