Topeka's Jayhawk Theatre Restoration Project Hosts Benefit Concert Featuring Kelley Hunt

The Jayhawk Theatre in downtown Topeka
The Jayhawk Theatre in downtown Topeka

At one time in our history, nearly every town in America had at least one grand cinema palace.  Most of them were destroyed by the wrecking ball of progress, but some have survived and preservationists are working to restore them.  One such theater is in downtown Topeka.  The Jayhawk was once among the jewels in a thriving downtown area.  It was nearly lost along with the city’s other theaters, but Topekans have rallied to save it from destruction.  It will take more time and money to restore its original splendor, but it’s now ready to host some events -- including a benefit concert tomorrow (SAT) night.  KPR’s Tom Parkinson spoke with Jeff Carson, the president of the Historic Jayhawk Theatre Board of Directors, and asked him about the old theater and the concert.
