Teachers' Union Appeals Due Process Law

The state’s largest teachers union is appealing a court decision upholding a law which eliminates a due process protection for the state’s public school teachers. Kansas lawmakers eliminated independent hearings for tenured teachers facing termination in 2014. Marcus Baltzell of the Kansas National Education Association thinks the law is another example of the state legislature attacking teachers. We really see it as a concerted effort by special interests to exert their will upon public schools so that they don't exist any more." Baltzell said. " We call it a 'death by a thousand cuts.'" Baltzell said the union’s challenge to the due process elimination is on the docket of the appeals court. The union previously failed to overturn the law on a technicality.
