Sundown Towns

image of Sundown TownsThis week on KPR Presents, a dark chapter in our nation's history that many Americans have never heard of. Sociologist James Loewen looks at the years 1890 to 1940, when many towns drove out their black populations, and lynchings and the Ku Klux Klan were on the rise. We'll hear how this turbulent period launched the NAACP, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, which marks its 100th anniversary this month. We'll also hear from Dr. Shawn Leigh Alexander of the Langston Hughes Center at the University of Kansas, and Dr. Carmeletta Williams of Johnson County Community College.
