Starting Friday, it's illegal for minors in Kansas to use tanning beds. The law bars tanning salons from serving anyone under 18 and includes no exceptions , even for minors who have parental consent to tan.

Hillary Gee is with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, one of the groups that pushed for the law.

“This is really about cancer prevention, very similar to the age requirements to buy tobacco products. Children aren’t old enough to smoke, now in Kansas they’re no longer old enough to tan,” says Gee.

Spray tanning is not affected by the rule. Tanning salons now face a fine of up to $250 for each violation of the no-minors law.
