Should KS Perform Drug Tests on Welfare Recipients?

The Kansas Legislature could take up the issue of drug testing people who receive benefits from the state. Republican state Senator Jeff King of Independence says it would allow the state to identify those with addiction problems and get them the help they need.

Meanwhile, Democratic state Senator Laura Kelly, of Topeka, says the legislation...which has not yet gone to committee...might need to call for testing a broader category of people.

Kelly said that in other states, drug tests of those receiving benefits haven't resulted in a large number of failures, and there may be no cost benefit to the state in testing Kansans.
