Remote-controlled quadcopters, often called “drones,” are a growing hobby. Now, Shawnee County Emergency Management officials are considering how to get help from drone operators.

In a meeting this week, county officials discussed a proposal to form a volunteer group of drone pilots to help in local emergencies. Logistics Officer James Steele says the hope is that drones could help responders get a bird’s-eye view of emergency situations.

“Whether it be at a fire, or a house collapse or anything along those lines to do whatever’s necessary for that mission,” says Steele.

Officials still need to work out legal and insurance issues.
