Kansas Senate Advances Tighter Welfare Rules

The Kansas Senate plans to take final action today (THUR) establishing tighter rules for people receiving state aid, such as food stamps and cash assistance.  The bill would reduce eligibility from four years to three years. Republican Senator Molly Baumgarner thinks the changes are appropriate.

The new rules also include a $25-a-day limit on ATM withdrawals with a cash-assistance debit card. Supporters said the bill is intended to move people more quickly from welfare assistance into employment. Opponents see the bill as a harsh attack on poor Kansans.
