Rick Santorum in KS to Stump for Brownback

Santorum speaks while Governor Brownback and First Lady Mary Brownback look on. (Photo by Stephen Koranda)Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum called Kansas Governor Sam Brownback a “visionary” during a campaign stop today (MON) in Olathe. Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, says Kansas could act as an example for other states with the tax-cutting, small-government policies pursued by Brownback.

While speaking today (MON), Governor Brownback compared himself to Ronald Reagan and his likely Democratic opponent Paul Davis to President Obama. The Davis campaign issued a statement saying that Davis stands for what the campaign calls moderate, common sense policies. Governor Brownback is also facing a primary challenge from Wichita business owner Jennifer Winn.

====================

Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum stopped in Kansas to campaign for Governor Sam Brownback. At a stop Monday in Olathe, Santorum called Brownback a “warrior” for conservative principles. KPR’s Stephen Koranda reports.

Santorum and Brownback served in the U.S. Senate together. Santorum says Brownback takes on the big issues, and he isn’t surprised Brownback has ruffled some feathers with his tax-cutting, small-government policies. Santorum says Kansas could be a leader for other states.

“This man is a visionary. I don’t use that term lightly, I don’t think I've ever used the term to describe another politician I’ve campaigned for. But I believe that with him. He is a visionary in a state that can lead,” says Santorum.

Brownback was working to fire up the conservative base during the event, which included dropping the name of a Republican icon.

“I am a Reagan-style Republican, my opponent is an Obama-style Democrat, and you get a chance to choose this fall which way you want to go,” says Brownback.

The likely Democratic nominee for governor in Kansas is House Minority Leader Paul Davis. His campaign issued a statement saying he stands for what they call moderate, common sense policies. Brownback also faces a primary challenge from Wichita business owner Jennifer Winn.
