Republican Representative Criticizes Transfer from Children's Fund

Kansas Children’s Initiative Fund

Governor Sam Brownback's budget director outlined some of the governor's budget priorities before a joint meeting of House and Senate committees Wednesday. Brownback wants to take more money from the state highway fund and from children's programs in order to address a projected $190 million deficit. One of the proposed cuts would take $50 million from the Children’s Initiative Fund, which was set up to promote the health and welfare of Kansas children. Republican Representative Stephanie Clayton, from Overland Park, says it's a very bad idea.

Clayton says pulling that much money from the Children’s Initiative Fund is irresponsible but says she remains optimistic that the proposal will be eliminated once it goes to committee.
