Report: ALEC Upping Corporate Clout in KS, MO

khi-bannerA report released today (WED) by Progress Missouri and two left-leaning national groups says a controversial national business organization has too much clout in the Kansas and Missouri legislatures. The report says many citizens don’t realize that the American Legislative Exchange Council – or ALEC – is behind efforts in both states to reduce environmental regulations, roll back worker protections and undermine Obamacare. Brendan Fischer is with the Center for Media and Democracy.

Fischer says some lawmakers in both states have put the interests of ALEC’s corporate members above those of their constituents. Spokesman Bill Meierling counters that ALEC’s agenda is driven more by legislators than corporations.

The release of the report comes just a few days ahead of ALEC’s spring meeting, scheduled for Friday in Kansas City.
