American-born Chinese author Iris Chang was born on this date (March 28) in 1968. Before her death in 2004, the human rights author wrote "The Rape of Nanking," about the Japanese invasion of China during World War II. During a trip to China last year, Commentator John Richard Schrock visited Nanjing... and the war memorial that commemorates victims of the attack.

Commentator John Richard Schrock is the director of biology education at Emporia State University, where he trains future biology teachers. He's also a regular contributor to Kansas Public Radio.

Production assistance for this commentary was provided by KPR News Intern Austin Fitts.
