Wichita Mayor Promotes Aviation in China

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer will be in China next week for the opening of a privately funded trade office tasked with promoting Wichita's aviation industry. The Wichita Eagle reports the trade office's mission will be to identify sales and partnering opportunities. The office in Beijing also will work to connect Wichita and China businesses for parts, maintenance and other products and services.

Prairie Chickens Considered for Protection

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Last year was rough on lesser prairie chickens, a grouse that's been a candidate for federal protection for years and is being considered for inclusion under the Endangered Species Act. In 2012, there were about 34,000 lesser prairie chickens across several states. Kansas is home to about half the lesser prairie chickens overall.

1993 Flood Marks 20th Anniversary

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It's been 20 years since waters receded from a massive flood that overtook more than 1,000 levees in nine Midwestern states, including Kansas and Missouri. Jud Kneuvean of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers describes the 1993 flood as "incredible."  About 50 people died, graves were unearthed, and as many as 100,000 homes were flooded.
