Kansas Jayhawks Advance to Elite 8 with Win Over NC State

Elijah Johnson came through for the Kansas Jayhawks for the second-straight game. Johnson drove down the lane for a layup with 13.5 seconds left to secure KU's 60-57 win over North Carolina State at the NCAA's Midwest Regional Semifinal in St. Louis.  KU advanced to the Regional Finals for the second-straight season where it will face top-seeded North Carolina Sunday afternoon at 4:00pm.  With KU up by one-point, Tyshawn Taylor located Johnson running to the basket on an out-of-bounds play. Johnson's basket gave the Jayhawks a three-point lead and KU was able to keep NC State from scoring in the final seconds of the game to hold on for the win.  Next, Kansas will take on North Carolina, hoping to advance to the Final Four for the 14th time in school history -- and the first time since winning the National Championship in 2008.


Junction CIty Police Investigate Shooting

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (AP) — Police in Junction City say an argument over loud music turned violent when a gunman opened fire outside an apartment building. A resident told police he argued Thursday afternoon with a stranger who was sitting in a vehicle in the building's parking lot with loud music blaring before the shooting happened.


KS House Members Calls on Brownback to Acknowledge Mistake

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas House member says Governor Sam Brownback should acknowledge that private meetings with Republican lawmakers at his official residence were a mistake.  Republican Representative Charles Roth of Salina said yesterday (FRI) that Brownback should publicly promise not to have similar meetings in the future. The events are being investigated by Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor, a Democrat, for possible violations of the state's Open Meetings Act.


Afghan Shooter, Wife, Have Spoken Twice SInce Detainment

SEATTLE (AP) — An attorney for the wife of an Army staff sergeant charged with killing 17 Afghan civilians says the couple has been able to talk twice since he was detained. The attorney says Staff Sergeant Robert Bales called his wife, Karilyn Bales, first from overseas shortly after the March 11th massacre, then from the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on Wednesday.


Grandson of Basketball Inventor Dies

NEW YORK (AP) — The grandson of the inventor of basketball died on Tuesday. The Naismith International Basketball Foundation announced the death of Ian Naismith on its website and listed his age as 72. The North Carolina-based youth sports foundation Naismith ran gained attention in 2010 when it sold James Naismith's original 13 rules of basketball at auction for more than $4 million.
