Redistricting Maps Cause Statehouse Shakeup

The congressional map drawn by federal judges.Redistricting maps drawn by a federal court are causing a big shakeup in the Kansas Legislature. In the House, 21 districts pit sitting lawmakers against each other. Another 25 of the 125 districts contain no incumbent representative at all. The judges also drew new congressional districts. The plan would put Lawrence entirely in the 2nd Congressional District. The map would also move Riley County from the 2nd to the 1st District of western and central Kansas. Republican Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins represents the 2nd District.

Secretary of State Kris Kobach says he won’t file an appeal to try to block or alter the redistricting maps, though he’s concerned the changes could confuse voters. He says the filing deadline for legislative candidates is still scheduled for Monday at noon.
