Proposal to Lure American Royal to Kansas Discovered by Lawmaker

Kansas lawmakers passed a preliminary budget last week that balances on paper... but it was a struggle. The state's ongoing revenue problems forced legislators to question where every dollar was going - even if it meant confronting Governor Sam Brownback. And that's just what happened to one Kansas City area lawmaker. Senator Jim Denning says the legislature didn't know about Brownback's plan to lure the American Royal from Missouri to Kansas until he started asking questions. The Overland Park Republican sat down with Kansas Statehouse reporter Jim McLean to talk about how he found out about the plan and why he objected to it.

Jim McLean is a reporter for the KHI News Service in Topeka.
