Convicted Tiller Murderer Won't Be Spared Hard Fifty Option
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ A judge has rejected a motion arguing that the man convicted of killing Wichita abortion provider Doctor George Tiller should not be subject to the Hard 50 sentence when he is resentenced. The Wichita Eagle reports an attorney for Scott Roeder argued in Sedgwick County Court Friday that a change in state law regarding how the Hard 50 Sentence is imposed should not be applied retroactively to Roeder.
Armed Robbery Attempt Results in Fatality for Suspect
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Sedgwick County authorities say a man suspected of an armed robbery fatally shot himself after trying to elude officers. Sheriff's Sergeant Lanon Thompson says the man held up a poker room early Saturday. KFDI reports a witness followed him until officers arrived. No one else was injured. The man's identity has not been released.
Mulberry Death and Fire Under Investigation
MULBERRY, Kan. (AP) _ The Kansas State Fire Marshal is investigating after firefighters found a woman's body during a fire at her southeast Kansas home. Crawford County Sheriff Dan Peak tells the Joplin Globe the body of 59-year-old Susan Montanye was found Friday in Mulberry. Peak said Saturday the cause of death has not been determined.
Ghost Tour Upsets Topeka Family of Deceased
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ A Topeka man is upset that a ghost tour charged people to enter a site where his grandfather was shot to death while working as a police officer. Ghost Tours of Kansas hosted an event at Topeka's Moose Lodge earlier this month. The lodge is where Clarence Shields, a police officer, was shot to death in April 1955 when he surprised two burglars. The Wichita Eagle reports Shields' grandson, Joey Little, says his family is bothered because charging admission made the site an entertainment venue.
Fort Hays State President Touts School During Tour
SALINA, Kan. (AP) _ After 15 months as Fort Hays State University president, Mirta Martin says she's pleased with efforts to re-emphasize retaining students and help them graduate with skills they will need to succeed. The Salina Journal reports Martin spent much of this week touring Kansas to tout the university in Hays.
Jayhawks Lose to Oklahoma State following Tragic Homecoming Parade
Backup quarterback J.W. Walsh ran for three touchdowns and passed for two more to help Number 14 Oklahoma State defeat Kansas 58-10 on Saturday, hours after a fatal crash near the stadium during the school's homecoming festivities. Four people were killed and dozens injured when a woman suspected of driving under the influence plowed a car into a crowd at the homecoming parade. Oklahoma State considered postponing the game, but in the end, opted to go ahead with it.
Kansas State's Jones Shines Despite Loss
The Texas Longhorns defeated Kansas State 23-9 Saturday in game played in heavy rain storm. Charles Jones, Kansas State's junior running back, rushed for a career-best 122 yards. Jones gained 87 in the second half.
