Icy Roads Claim Four More Lives in Kansas

ANDOVER, Kan. (AP) _ Authorities say wintry weather has killed four more people on Kansas roads.  Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton blamed icy roads for a double fatality crash around 3 p.m. Friday about 10 miles southeast of Newton.  Two others died a couple hours later when a truck jackknifed on an icy stretch of Interstate 35 near Andover, went through a median barrier and struck a sport utility vehicle. The crash killed the SUV's driver, 65-year-old Shirley Ann Starr, of Kansas City, Missouri, and a truck passenger, 60-year-old Arlene Dale Harrison, of Winnipeg, in the Canadian province of Manitoba.  The Kansas Highway Patrol also blamed icy roads for two deadly crashes Thursday. Much of Kansas was hit with snow and freezing rain that began Thursday and continued to roll across the state Friday.

Greeley County Hogs and Residents Compete for Water Supply

TRIBUNE, Kan. (AP) _ Only 1,200 people live in Kansas' smallest county, where using irrigation is no longer an option for many because the groundwater underneath the arid prairie is nearly exhausted due to decades of overuse.  Economic development was at a standstill, so residents voted five years ago to allow the nation's second-largest hog-feeding operation to move in. A second feeding site was just approved by the state.   It was a significant tradeoff.  Kansas-based Seaboard Foods is now its top taxpayer and accounts for roughly 9 percent of Greeley County's tax base. But though the thousands of hogs require less water than it would take to irrigate crops, the company is pumping wells that had been idled for a decade. Environmentalists and some residents fear the remaining groundwater will be used up.

(AP) _ Wichita State says tests on injured forward Anton Grady show no signs of spinal cord trauma stemming from a collision in a game Friday that left him motionless on the court.
