New Tax Scams Reported as Tax Deadline Approaches

Are you entitled to a tax refund for attending college years ago? A spokesman for the IRS in Kansas, Michael Devine, says: "No."  Devine is warning Kansans about some of the newest scams making the rounds this year. One involves unfamiliar tax preparation services telling clients they can claim the bogus college tax credit, even if they haven't been on campus in years -- or never attended in the first place.

Devine says the best course of action is to make sure you're dealing with a reputable tax preparer. If you have questions about particular tax credits, you can contact the IRS toll-free at 888-829-1040, or visit the IRS online at IRS.gov.
